On Tonya’s experience with nonprofit work and The Humane Society of Forsyth County: Tonya is currently fostering Grey Bear, the kitten, at her clinic and has cared for him for several months. On several occasions Tonya has volunteered her time by visiting the shelter and consulting on issues pertaining to the care of the animals in our program. Comments: On John’s experience with animals: John, along with his family in Savannah, has been involved in animal rescue for many years. He is a compassionate man with a great love and deep respect for animals. He continually demonstrates an understanding when "just one more" lost or abandoned animal needs a roof over its head. His patience level is shown through his coping with allergies, asthma, ubiquitous pet hair, maneuvering over baby gates, being bitten and scratched and having his shoes chewed up. He is known to be late for appointments because of his habit of stopping to help stray dogs. Several of the dogs he has assisted in this manner have been placed in our adoption program.
On John’s experience with nonprofit work and The Humane Society of Forsyth County: John has served as a foster parent / home for 56 animals (dogs and cats) as of November 2009. He has worked with numerous “problematic” dogs, taking them into his home and providing rehabilitation support for them. John works HSFC dog adoption events frequently, especially when heavy lifting is needed. He has been a source of maintenance support at the shelter with “fix it / handyman” jobs are needed. He has made vet runs on many occasions, providing vital assistance for the animals in our care. In 2009 he attended both major fundraisers, Wags & Whiskers and the Bark & Boogie Ball. He also worked very hard as a volunteer for the No Flea Market, making numerous drives to various locations in order to pick up items being donated for the event as well as working the day of the event itself. His flexible schedule and years of exposure to animal rescue would make him an exceptional consideration for the Humane Society. |

Qualifications:
- My professional background includes an Electronics Engineering Technology Degree and for the past 10 years I have worked as an Outside Plant Engineer for the Telecommunications Industry. My personal background includes a lovely wife and ten great cats of our own!
- I have been a member of the Humane Society of Forsyth County for just over two years, and I do volunteer work for us consistently every week. One of my specialties for the HSFC is cat socialization. I have a firm belief that our animals at the shelter need constant human attention in order to be most adoptable. When animals feel comfortable with humans, and approach when a human walks into a room, it is so much easier to help that animal find their new parents. I am also a Cat Adoption Team member, where I go to the shelter and help with adoptions. I help to answer questions about the cats in the shelter, talk about their personalities, and try to find a good fit with the new parents. I also give suggestions to help with the transition of the cats to their new homes, to minimize the stress of leaving the shelter, traveling, and adjusting to their new home and family.
- I am also a member of the HSFC’s Information Technology Team. My projects include helping with any of our computer and video needs including: Producing, filming and editing grant videos, such as the HSFC Ahmisa Grant Video for 2008 and 2009, in which we were awarded a total of $8,000 for the Feral Cat Program; Creating and Producing HSFC commercials, the first web commercial is complete, and will be located on our website soon. I am currently working on several more web based commercials to promote the HSFC and to get our wonderful pets adopted; Testing and installation of equipment and cabling at the shelter, Assistance with providing TV entertainment to our furry friends; Assisting with computer and network maintenance and support as needed.
Other areas where I feel I would contribute are in the development of Processes and Procedures for such things as: shelter operations and maintenance, pet care and adoptions. In addition, I can help with the current needs and future planning for our buildings and grounds. If I am elected to the board, I will continue to keep the animals first and work hard to help facilitate the vision of our organization for the animals in our community.
Doug Valery's contributions and dedication to the animals make him an exceptional consideration for the Humane Society. |

Comments: On Lance’s experience with animals: In 2009 Lance fostered Buddy, Cooper and adopted both of them. He also fostered Ricky and Lucy and worked to place them in their forever homes through our adoption events. He is a “dad” to several of dogs of his own in addition to the additions that have been added by his involvement with the HSFC. He works continually with transport of animals in other “kill” scenarios as part of an ongoing effort to prevent unnecessary euthanasia.
On Lance’s experience with nonprofit work and The Humane Society of Forsyth County: Early in 2009 Lance worked with the Wags & Whiskers committee by conducting a raffle ticket sale for a $3k ring (that he donated) which was drawn as the “grand prize” of the event. At the same time of the year he implemented the Ruff & Purr Ride for Life to benefit the animals cared for by both the HSFC and the Feral Cat Program. He later committed to working on behalf of the Bark & Boogie Ball and served as BBB Co-Chair until the event, held on 9/12/09. As a result of his fostering Lance also became involved in our off site adoption efforts, introducing new fundraising methods at the adoptions in which he participated. The totality of Lance’s contribution to the HSFC makes him a very worthy consideration. |
