Local resident and animal lover, well, lover of boxers, mostly, Marsha Morris adopted Dootie the boxer, left stranded on an island at Lake Lanier and rescued by the Humane Society of Forsyth County approximately ten years ago. Dootie became the love of Marsha’s life and the two had many years of joy and close companionship together. Because of her deep gratitude to the HSFC for saving Dootie’s life Marsha proactively reached out to Andreia Brandon, Fundraising Chairperson, in the spring of 2008, offering to support the first Wags & Whiskers Wine and Food Tasting. Having spent much of her time in various artistic endeavors, including painting, pottery molding and jewelry making, Marsha was in a position to substantially increase the potential of the auction conducted at Wags & Whiskers. Since then, Marsha has made a point of contributing to event-based fundraisers, contributing numerous pieces of art. During the planning cycle of the second Wags & Whiskers Wine and Food Tasting in the spring of 2009 Dootie the boxer died, passing quietly due to old age, and Marsha’s heart was broken. Reaching out to friends she expressed her deep grief of “having lost the love of her life.”Andreia found herself in a pickle: wanting to support her friend and supporter of the Humane Society but knowing at the same time a two year old boxer pup had recently come to the Humane Society. Should this be mentioned? Was the pain of Dootie’s passing too raw to “go there?” Thinking carefully about the person she had grown to know over the course of the previous year Andreia decided to mention, very gently, if Marsha was ever ready to adopt again, certainly there is “usually a boxer” to be had. Upon mention of this possibility Marsha sprang to life. Was there a boxer now who needed a home? Needless to say, within a week, Tank the two-year-old boxer was enjoying his new home and Mom, Marsha Morris. Since then Marsha has increased her involvement with the HSFC, working closely with Andreia on event based fundraisers of all sizes. In February of 2010 she augmented her efforts by conducting a “litter round-up” campaign. At the Gold’s Gym “Work Out a Thon” she contributed the results of her efforts, a whopping donation of over 800 pounds of cat litter! Currently she is focusing on rounding up cleaning supplies, a resource in constant need at the shelter and she plans on building a display of her donation at the third annual Wags & Whiskers Wine and Food Tasting to be held on April 25, 2010. Marsha Morris has been a blessing to our organization. She is a shining example of how “one person can make a difference” and we are so very grateful for her and all she has done for the HSFC.
