| Volunteer Spotlight: Cindy & Lauren Russo |
January 2011. Most teenagers who attend a Career Day at school, do just that ....they simply "attend". They do not really listen to the speaker or hear the message being delivered.
However, when Lauren Russo attended Career Day at her school, she not only listened, she heard the message and took action! Being an animal lover all her life, Lauren was excited to hear about the various opportunities to help the homeless animals with the Humane Society of Forsyth County. She went home and convinced her mom, Cindy, to volunteer with her at the HSFC Adoption Center. Ever since, this wonderful mother and daughter team have been "regulars" at the shelter on Sunday nights. They are a huge help and the shelter staff has come to truly count on them every Sunday! They take the dogs out to exercise areas, playing with them and loving them along the way. Balto, an adorable collie/retriever mix, who is one of their favorites, is always given extra care and attention as a long term resident. Lauren and Cindy reset all the kennels and get the dogs set up for overnight in the kennels. If there are any puppies at the shelter that night, Cindy (and others) will usually joke with Lauren about checking her purse to make sure she doesn't have any puppies in there. She just adores puppies!
After several hours, they are ready to say goodnight to the animals and leave the shelter. A bit tired, they move a little slower, usually with a few muddy paw prints on their clothes. But if you look closely, you will still see big smiles on their faces. They are happy with what they have just accomplished. To quote them, "No matter what we give in time to the shelter, it does not compare with what the shelter gives us in return!"
If you have a little free time and a lot of love in your heart, you could help save an animal by volunteering.
